NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - The SMU women's cross country team has added another piece of hardware to its collection as the squad was one of 158 Division I women's programs to receive the 2007 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honor, the organization announced today.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet and must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.

Additionally, standout Silje Fjortoft was one of 91 female student-athletes representing 62 Division I institutions to be named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.

The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have completed a minimum 24 semester hours through the 2007 fall term. Additionally, the student-athlete must finish in the top 15 runners or top ten percent of finishers at their respective NCAA regional meet, or receive All-American honors.

Fjortoft was named the NCAA South Central Region Athlete of the Year and C-USA Freshman and Newcomer of the Year after strong performances at Regionals and the C-USA Championships. She clocked a winning 6K time of 20:35 at Regionals, 11 seconds ahead of the field. The two-time C-USA Athlete of the Week selection took runner-up honors at the C-USA Championships with a 5K time of 17:46.0. Fjortoft capped off her rookie campaign with a 49th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships. She was the third freshman to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 21:11.00 on the 6K course.
