Mustangs Take Part In L.I.T.E. Back To School Supply Drive
Aug. 31, 2006 Over 35 SMU student-athletes shared their Saturday morning with children and families at the L.I.T.E. ( Lifting Individuals Through Education) Back to School Supply Drive at Forest Lane Academy in North Dallas on August 26, 2006. The Mustang student-athletes, staff, and coaches stuffed and handed out school supplies to the young kids while some played games. This drive positively affected the educational growth of the surrounding community by equipping families in need with school supplies. The entire SMU track and field team and men's golf squad was present, along with numerous members of the women's basketball, rowing, tennis, and women's golf teams. Former Dallas Cowboy great and NFL Hall of Famer, Tony Dorsett, was among the SMU student-athletes as well, serving the community. The SMU Athletics Department sponsors a comprehensive Community Outreach program which takes advantage of the skills, experience and notoriety of its 400+ student-athletes, coaches and staff members to reinforce positive messages to K-12 children and community members in the Dallas area. Active participation in the community has been at the heart of the school's philosophy and philanthropy. By focusing efforts on after-school clubs, inner-city youth recreation programs, education and literacy projects, shelters and other culturally diverse youth organizations, Mustang student-athletes, coaches, and staff members are able to make an impact that goes beyond watching the game.
