Seven Tracksters Make NCAA Regional Qualifying Cuts

LINCOLN, Neb. (SMU)--Seven Mustangs have qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Regionals, hosted by Nebraska May 30-31. Gayla Cloud, Silje Fjortoft, Lauren Kuhner, Andrea Kvetova, Christina Mueller, Ilyssa Pettigrew and Kylie Spurgeon each met the qualifying standards for their events. Cloud will compete in the 100m hurdles. The freshman from De Soto, Texas clocked a season-best mark of 13.70 at the Conference USA Championships, finishing fifth in the event. Fjortoft, a freshman from Orsta, Norway, won the 3,000m steeplechase at the C-USA Championships, crossing the line in 10:33.72. Kuhner qualified in the hammer throw, as one of four SMU hurlers to make the cut. The sophomore from Houston took fourth in the hammer at the C-USA Championships, heaving a 50.87m throw. Earlier in the season, Kuhner threw a 56.54m at the Long Beach Invite. Kvetova was the second Mustang thrower to qualify. The Czech Republic native won the javelin event at the conference championships with a 50.28m mark. Kvetova's season-best throw was at the Mt. SAC Relays in mid-April, where she tossed a 52.70m throw. Mueller, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, became the third hurler to qualify when she won the conference crown in the discus. Mueller recorded a season-best throw of 54.26m to win the event. Pettigrew qualified for the 800m run. The senior from Rockwall, Texas took third in the event at the C-USA Championships, crossing the line in 2:09.86. Her season-best time was at the Mt. SAC Relays, where she finished the course in 2:08.52.
The fourth and final hurler to make the cut was Spurgeon. The freshman from Owasso, Okla. threw the discus 42.59m at the conference championships, finishing 11th in the field. Spurgeon's season-best throw was at the Bobby Lane Invite in late March where the freshman managed a 51.60m throw.
