SMU Women's Soccer Hosts Arizona State and Texas Tech This Weekend



Gunter made eight saves last time out

DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU women's soccer team (2-0) hosts Arizona State (2-2) Friday and Texas Tech (2-2) on Sunday.

Last time out
The Mustangs downed Kansas 2-0 last Sunday. Goalkeeper Ashley Gunter made eight saves in the game. Sophomore Kim Peabody scored the first goal at 27:01 off a feed from senior Kimber Bailey. The second goal was scored in the 90th minute by freshman Kristin Medeiros.

Scouting the opposition
Arizona State is 2-2 on the season, having split last weekend's matches, shutting out UNC-Charlotte, but falling to No. 3 Texas. The last time these two teams met was in 2002, when SMU beat the Sun Devils in OT, 2-1. Karin Volpe scored her second career goal against Charlotte, while sophomore goalkeeper Briana Silvestri recorded her second career shut-out.

Texas Tech is also 2-2 on the season entering this weekend. Last time out, Tech beat UTSA 4-1. After being shut-out in the first half, the Red Raiders rallied and scored four goals in the second half, taking the game. The last time these teams met was in 2005, when SMU took the game, 3-1.

SMU Under New Direction
Head coach Brent Erwin is in his first season as head coach. Prior to this season, Erwin spent two seasons as the head coach of the UCF men's soccer program. So far, his Mustangs are 2-0 on the season under his direction.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter is on the Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2007. Gunter earned second-team NSCAA All-America honors last season and was named the 2006 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. She was also selected to the Preseason All-Conference USA team in 2007, along with two of her teammates.

 

 

Three SMU Players Earn Preseason Accolades
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter, senior defender/midfielder Kimber Bailey and junior defender Carley Phillips were each named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team prior to the start of the 2007 season.
