Mustang Women's Soccer Dominates Rice, 5-1, for Ninth Straight Win
Oct. 15, 2006 Houston, Texas - The SMU women's soccer team extended its winning streak to nine games with a commanding 5-1 victory over Rice in Houston, Texas, Sunday afternoon under rainy weather conditions. With the win, SMU improves to 12-2-1 and remains unbeaten in Conference USA play (5-0). The Owls drop to 10-4-1 (2-4 C-USA). The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first with a breakaway goal by senior Olivia O'Rear at the 32:10 mark. It was her 11th goal of the season. Junior Kimber Bailey followed up with SMU's second goal three minutes later with a shot from the left side of the box after beating Rice goalkeeper Amy McClintock. Rice got its lone goal at the 49:31 mark with a goal by Erin Scott. But the Mustangs put up three more goals against the Owls. Bailey tallied her second goal of the day at the 51:32 mark while freshman Kim Peabody gave SMU a 4-1 lead at the 56:38 mark shot past a charging McClintock. Sophomore Kirsten Moran rounded out the Mustang scoring at the 77:16 mark, giving SMU a 5-1 lead which held up until the game's final whistle. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter was stellar in goal, making five saves to notch her 12th victory of the season. The Mustangs return home for their final regular season games at Westcott Field, beginning Friday evening vs. Marshall (5-7-1, 1-4 C-USA). Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
