Rowing Holds Annual Awards Banquet

DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU rowing team held its annual awards banquet Friday evening at the Radisson Central Expressway in Dallas. Meredith Walter, Kelly McKinley, Elizabeth Hagerty and Amanda DeGroff were among those honored. Walter was named Outstanding Freshman Athlete for her role in the season's successes. Walter joined the Mustangs from Minneapolis, Minn., where she rowed for the Minneapolis Rowing Club. This season, Walter joined both the varsity eight and four, helping the crew to a second-place finish at the MIRC, and a close finish against Texas, among other accomplishments. McKinley earned the Most Improved Rower award. The sophomore from Shrewsbury, Mass. rowed in the varsity eight boat much of the year, helping the Mustangs to strong showings at the SIRA regatta and the MIRC. Hagerty received the Coach "O" Award for Most Outstanding Athlete. The sophomore coxswain has led the varsity boats to several top finishes this spring, including a fifth-place finish in the varsity eight event at the SIRA regatta and a second-place finish at the MIRC. DeGroff was given the Diamond "M" Award for best representing the spirit of Mustang rowing. DeGroff, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., joined the Mustangs as a walk-on her freshman year. She started in the novice eight her freshman season and is now a staple in the varsity eight boats. The five seniors, Ellen Cieszkiewicz, DeGroff, Krystal Kulka, Julie Pollard and Alexa Tuszynski, were also honored for their commitment to the SMU rowing program.
Hagerty was elected 2008-09 co-captain by her teammates. The other captain will be named by the coaching staff in August.
