DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's and women's swim and dive teams each came up short against Texas, Saturday at Joe Perkins Natatorium. The No. 18 women lost 141-96 to the No. 3 Longhorns, while the No. 23 men fell 158-110 to the Longhorns which are currently ranked No. 1 on the men's side.

The women were able to earn victories in three of the last five events after being edged by tenths of seconds earlier in the meet. Therese Svendsen won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 55.77, edging out Texas' Katie Riefenstahl by .5 seconds. Devon Callaghan won the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing in just 1:03.84. In earlier events SMU lost the 200 yard medley relay by .3 seconds (1:43.47-1:43.77). Denisa Smolenova finished second in the closest race of the day in the 100 yard butterfly, when she finished in 56.42 seconds, just .13 behind Texas' Jess Guro who had a time of 56.29.

On the men's side Pontus Renholm had the most successful day for the Mustangs, winning two events. He won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.48 before being a part of the 200 freestyle relay squad which finished first in just 1:21.89. Tom Cole was the other SMU swimmer to win an individual event, finishing first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.16.

The day concludes the dual meet season for both the men's and women's teams. The men will next be in action in Houston on Feb. 24 as part of the Conference USA Championship. The women are scheduled to compete in Columbia, Mo. beginning Feb. 12 as part of the Grand Prix. Full results of both events will be made available on smumustangs.com.
