IRVING, Texas (SMU) --- SMU junior Bruno Guarda was named men's soccer Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. The team captain from Piracicaba, Brazil, scored a goal and was credited with an assist in the No. 8 Mustangs 5-1 rout of No. 3 Virginia on Friday in the first round of the SMU Mi Cocina Classic. He also fed a pass to teammate Gabe Arredondo for the game-winning goal in Sunday's 1-0 victory against Georgetown. He was named the Mi Cocina Classic Tournament MVP for his efforts. The 2006 C-USA Player of the Year picks up his first weekly award.

Guarda, a member of the 2007 Hermann Trophy watch list, leads the Mustangs with six points on two goals and two assists through three games. He is also a preseason first-team All-America pick by College Soccer News.com and was selected as the preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year.

The Mustangs (2-0-1) next match is against 13th-ranked and defending NCAA champion UC-Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. CT as part of the New Mexico Tournament. The Mustangs will also face No. 16 Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of the event.

The SMU Mustangs took the Mi Cocina Classic title, after defeating Virginia and Georgetown. The full results and All-Tournament team selections are as follows:

2nd Place: Virginia (Lost to SMU 1-5, Def. Tulsa 2-0)

3rd Place: Tulsa (Def. Georgetown 1-0, Lost to Virginia 0-2)

4th Place: Georgetown (Lost to Tulsa 0-1, Lost to SMU 0-1)
