DALLAS (SMU) -
The top-ranked SMU men's soccer team captured the 2006 Conference USA regular-season title with a 1-0 victory over visiting Marshall Saturday evening at Westcott Field. It was SMU's second consecutive C-USA regular season title, and its sixth league crown in the last seven years. SMU improves to 15-1-3 (5-1-2 C-USA) while Marshall drops to 4-9-2 (1-5-1 C-USA). The Mustang win was also head coach Schellas Hyndman's 450th career win.
In an extremely physical game right from the opening whistle, the Mustangs controlled the pace of the game, both offensively and defensively. SMU senior Chase Wileman posted his team-high seventh goal of the season with a sweet shot which found the lower left corner at the 26:12 mark. Assists were credited to Adrian Chevannes and Bruno Guarda. SMU had numerous opportunities to increase its lead with shots hitting the crossbar and posts.
A total of 39 fouls were called along with four yellow cards and one red card - all issued to Marshall. The Thundering Herd played with 10 players for the last 36 minutes of the game as Clayton Cochrane was served a red card after tackling SMU's Jeff Harwell.
SMU outshot the Thundering Herd, 19-7. SMU goalkeeper Matt Wideman posted his 10th shutout of the season (the team's 12th of the season).
As the No. 1 seed in the Conference USA Championship, SMU will take on the No. 8 seed Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 12:00 p.m., which will either be Marshall or FIU. A make-up game between UCF and Marshall is scheduled to take place on Monday in Tulsa. The game between the two teams was called earlier this month due to inclement weather.
