BERKELEY, CALIF. (SMU) - Forward Paulo da Silva scored his third goal in four games and goalkeeper Craig Hill made five saves to lead the SMU men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against the Cal Bears at the Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs, who are ranked No. 7 in the current National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) poll, now are 3-0-1 on the season. The Bears, who are No. 8 in the NSCAA poll, also are 3-0-1. Thanks to goal differential (Cal beat Cornell, 5-0, in the first round), Cal was named tournament champion.
After the teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime, da Silva put the Ponies on the scoreboard with his third goal of the young season. Freshman Payton Hickey served a pass to da Silva, who headed it past Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 48th minute to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage. The Bears tied the game in the 82nd minute on a goal by A.J. Soares.
Hill, da Silva and defender Leone Cruz represented SMU on the all-tournament team.
The Mustangs now return home to host their first game of the year when they host George Mason at 7:30 p.m. Friday and then host Oakland at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Prego's Express Italian Men's Soccer Invitational at Westcott Field.
