DALLAS (SMU) - In an effort to cast a wider net for engagement with local and regional communities, the SMU Athletics Department will offer a Bus Brigade program in 2010. The Bus Brigade is an opportunity to expose area youth to SMU and the excitement of a college football game day experience. By exposing children to a Division I University campus and athletic event, children will be motivated to create goals and work to achieve them. Through interaction on campus with students, faculty and student athletes, children will be shown that they can reach their dreams.
SMU's Bus Brigade program provides individuals, businesses and civic groups with the opportunity to support and encourage children throughout DFW by giving them the opportunity to attend a 2010 home SMU football game. The program consists of bus transportation from the children's school to the game, a game ticket, hot dog and drink. Enrichment activities can also be arranged if the participating school or youth group so chooses. SMU's Bus Brigade goal is to have 250 buses sponsored throughout the season at five home games, resulting in 12,500 students attending games.
"As we grow this program, one thing that is vitally important is a connection to the Dallas community," said SMU Head Football Coach June Jones. "We can be Dallas' college team, but building that connection starts at a young age. We need young people to grow up cheering for the Mustangs and the Bus Brigade campaign can really play a role in that process. These kids will come to campus, learn about the University and our team, and see all that SMU has to offer. It's a wonderful opportunity to share SMU with the Dallas community as a whole."
In addition to the positive impact on youth in our community, contributing partners also receive tangible benefits - including video board recognition at the football games and possible tax deduction benefits.
