SMU VIP READING PROGRAM

10/9/06-12/8/06 The SMU VIP (Very Important Pony) Reading Challenge program's focus is to encourage 4th grade students to read in their leisure time and teach them reading can open many doors and opportunities! SMU student-athletes will be involved in this challenge by visiting DISD classrooms to speak about the importance of reading and participate in activities with the kids.  [more]

8/8/06 On August 8, SMU women's basketball standout Katy Cobb enthused kids in attendance at "Milk and Cookies" at the University Park Public Library.  [more]

6/12/06 Rachael Forish took time out during the summer to participate in the "Milk and Cookies" program at the University Park Public Library in University Park in early June.  [more]

7/11/06 SMU junior volleyball middle blocker Kara Cornelius took part in the Milk & Cookies program on July 11 at the University Park Public Library. Cornelius, an Amarillo, Texas native, was a big hit with the children as she read betime stories to 30 plus children.   [more]

CAMPUS VISIT PROGRAM

2006 Football Season At each of the home football games, Bob's Steak and Chop House has brought out buses of DISD students in the SMU community relations' Campus Visit Program. As the buses arrive on campus, the chaperones are given football magnets and posters for the kids to take home with them. The groups are then escorted to a spot on the Boulevard to have their own tailgating experience.   [more]

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

2/11/07 On Feb. 11 SMU hosted the National Girls & Women's In Sports Day at the SMU women's basketball team game vs. Marshall. 6/23/06 Eight members of the SMU Football team connected with the community in a very special way by lifting young spirits at the Heart House this week. The players spoke to children about the importance staying in school, accomplishing dreams and being upstanding citizens. Players signed posters, took pictures, mingled and embraced the kids. CAMP VISITS

6/21/06 SMU sophomore offensive lineman Sean Lobo traveled to Bowie High School on June 21 to speak to the junior high football campers as part of the SMU athletic department's summer community outreach efforts.   [more]

The SMU athletics department sponsors a comprehensive community outreach program which takes advantage of the skills, experience and notoriety of its 400+ student-athletes, coaches and staff members to reinforce positive messages to K-12 children and community members in the Dallas area. Active participation in the community has been at the heart of the school's philosophy and philanthropy. By focusing efforts on after-school clubs, inner-city youth recreation programs, education and literacy projects, shelters and other culturally diverse youth organizations, Mustang student-athletes, coaches, and staff members are able to make an impact that goes beyond watching the game.
