The chat with head men's basketball Matt Doherty scheduled for June 28 was rescheduled for Wed., July 12 at 2 PM. Below is the chat transcript.

Always check smumustangs.com for the latest information surrounding SMU athletics. Go Mustangs!!

Moderator: Good afternoon Mustang fans! Thanks for stopping by the SMUMustangs.com Summer Chat Series. SMU head men's basketball coach Matt Doherty is taking your questions today. Today's chat will begin shortly.
Moderator: We are ready to start taking your questions now.

Jeff (Phoenix): What's your best Michael Jordan story?
Coach Doherty: Hey Jeff, thanks for getting things started.

I beat him in pool and he got mad saying, "The table isn't regulation!"

He hates to lose.

Jerry (Baton Rouge): Do you plan to "build a fence" around the DFW area to get some of those great players now going elsewhere?
Coach Doherty: We definitely want to make the Metroplex and Texas our first priority, but we also feel that SMU can recruit nationally, too!

Todd (El Paso): How tough has it been on you and your family, moving from city to city the past five years?
Coach Doherty: It has been very tough moving around, six moves in nine years. I am lucky to have an awesome wife!!

John (Grapevine): Welcome to SMU, can't wait for the season to start. What aspect of the new practice facility are you most excited about?
Coach Doherty: Thanks John.

I am most excited about having our own gym that we can access any time we want. Our player development should really take off now!

Nathan (Keller): Will there be any changes to the team's uniforms this upcoming year?
Coach Doherty: Hi Nathan, thanks for the question.

Yes, there are some changes that are being discussed.

Mike (Dallas): When do you think the playing floor will get redone in Moody?
Coach Doherty: We will get a new floor in Moody at the same time the practice facility gets completed. Moody renovation is our next project and we already have started raising money for this phase of our growth in basketball.

Chase (Flower Mound): Hello Coach Doherty. I for one am really excited about the season and think you are one of the best hires we've had in the history of our department. Welcome to the Hilltop!! My question is this- Are you planning to play more schools from Texas in your non-conference schedule? Texas, Texas A&M, any other Big 12 schools maybe?
Coach Doherty: Thanks for the nice comments Chase.

We would love to play the Texas schools in The Big 12. This is something we will look at going forward, for sure.

I appreciate your excitement.

Willie (Dallas): Who will be your biggest challenge in Conference USA play this year? Good luck and Go Mustangs.
Coach Doherty: Our biggest challenge will probably be Memphis as they clearly dominated C-USA last year.

Charles (Euless): Coach - I really enjoy reading your blog entries. I appreciate you taking the time to keep us informed on a regular basis. If you had to name your starting five today, who would it be?
Coach Doherty: Thanks Charles. Regarding our starting line-up - it is too early to tell as we have had only one workout with the team so far.

Mike (Dallas): Coach Doherty - Do you think the three-point line in college basketball should be moved back?
Coach Doherty: I think the three-point line could be moved back 6"-10" and that would help the game a little because it would give coaches more of a reason to limit three-point attempts by marginal shooters.

Richard (Plano): I read in your blog that you had called Sam Perkins on his birthday. What is he doing now? He was my favorite Maverick back in "the day". Excited about the season and the fresh start for the team. Go get'em!! Thanks!
Coach Doherty: Thanks Richard for encouragement.

"Slim"... Sam Perkins has bounced between Dallas and Seattle. He has been involved in cancer promotions. He is one of my all-time favorite people!

Travis (Richardson): Will the practice facility be ready for the beginning of practice in 2006?
Coach Doherty: The practice facility should be ready in November of 2007!

Chris (Dallas): Good afternoon Coach Doherty - Thanks for doing this chat. Great idea, have enjoyed them so far. Have you talked to Quinton Ross? After his great season with the L.A. Clippers, I figured he would be a good asset for the team - someone the players can look up to and someone the coaching staff can use as an example. Hope you can get an entire team full of "Q"s.
Coach Doherty: SMU is very proud of Quinton Ross for representing the Mustangs so well with the L.A. Clippers.

Christy (Dallas): Hi Coach! Welcome to Texas and more importantly, welcome to SMU!!! Basketball is my favorite sport and I love going to games in Moody, especially since I'm a graduate of SMU. I'm curious; did you ever play or coach in Moody before? If not, you are going to love it. I'm biased of course, but I think it's one of the greatest basketball arenas in the country, and hope you can lead us to the NCAA Tournament this year!!! If you do, I'll be in the stands (hopefully), wherever we are playing!!!
Coach Doherty: Christy, I love your enthusiasm!

Moody Coliseum reminds me of Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke! As we return this program back to the glory days, Moody Magic will return!

As an assistant at Kansas we played SMU in Moody. It was a great atmosphere!

Moderator: Thanks Mustangs fans for taking part in today's Summer Chat Series. Remember to always check MustangHoopsBlog.com for Coach Doherty's latest blog entry and other information surrounding SMU men's basketball.

Be checking back in the near future for more scheduled chats with SMU coaches, administrators and student-athletes. Thanks to all who participated today and Go Mustangs!!
